	WATANABE Laboratory Position Professor/ D. Engineering (Hokkaido University) Research Area Video Processing Video Coding Image Processing Image Coding Audiovisual Information Processing Audiovisual Information Distribution Project Audiovisual Information Creation Technology Biographical Information Hiroshi Watanabe received the B.E., M.E. and Ph.D. degrees from Hokkaido University, Japan, in 1980, 1982 and 1985, respectively. He joined Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation (NTT) in 1985, and had been engaged in research and development for image and video coding system at NTT Human Interface Labs. (Later NTT Cyber Space Labs.) until August 2000. He has been also engaged in developing JPEG, MPEG standards under JTC 1/SC 29. He is currently a Professor at Global Information and Communication Institute, Waseda University, Japan and has been ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 29 Chairman since November 1999.
