CyberSpace and Communication Interface Design

Activities
Dr. Nobuyoshi Terashima is the Dean of the Graduate School of Global Information and Telecommunication Studies of Waseda University, Tokyo, Japan. He was the president of ATR Communication Systems Laboratories during 1991 to 1996.
He became a professor of Waseda University in 1996.
Since then, he has been engaged in the research and education concerning multimedia engineering, information technology and artificial intelligence and those impacts on human beings and society. He is a senior member of IEEE computer society, a member of New York Academy of Science, IEICE Japan, ACM and other academic societies of Japan.
He is the chair of 3D Forum Japan, chairperson of the steering committee of Internet Exposition, Saitama Pref., and the general chair of IEEE Multimedia and Expo 2001 which was held in Tokyo, Japan in August 2001.

He became the conference chair of IFIP World Congress 1996 (Canberra), the Program chair of IEEE Multimedia systems 1998 (Austin, Texas), the tutorial chair of IEEE Multimedia Systems 1996 (Hiroshima, Japan).

He was awarded the IFIP Silver Core in 1998, and the IEEE 50th Anniversary Award in 1996. He has edited the book on Advanced IT Tools, published by Chapman Halls in 1996.
He edited a book on HyperReality with Prof. John Tiffin of Victoria University, Wellington, New Zealand. He conceptualized HyperReality, which will be the paradigm for the Third Millennium.

Research Theme
Research on CyberSpace and Communication Interface Design

Through advancement of the Internet, a variety of human activities such as business, social and educational have been conducted on the Internet. Email exchange, on line banking and on line shopping can be held in CyberSpace on the Internet. In the information age, it is desirable that CyberSpace and communication interface are comfortable, easy to use and human friendly.
In this research, basic and applied technologies for CyberSpace and communication interface design are studied. Concretely speaking, CyberSpace design using 3D image processing ,computer graphics and virtual reality technologies, and communication interface design using human machine interface technology , artificial intelligence, agent, intelligent information retrieval , communication technologies are studied.
In this research, VR(virtual reality) theatre where a 2.2 by7.7 large scale screen has been installed is used for this study. VR theatre gives realistic sensations and provides convenient tools for research and development.
The projects such as scenery design, townscape design, installation design, architectural design are being conducted. At the same time, 3D digital archives such as Japanese traditional artifacts have been developed.
Using the 3D digital archives, the international collaborative research on distance education has been conducted among USA,Australia,New Zealand and Japan.

In this research, we conceptualized HyperReality which is the paradigm for the third millennium.
It is a communication infrastructure on the Internet, where inhabitants , such as human beings or animals, real or unreal work together or play with as if they were gathered in the cyberspace. To achieve this, HyperWorld and one or more coaction fields are introduced.
Based on HyperReality, many applications can be constructed mentioned above.
We also are focusing on the social impact of HypeRreality and human behavior in HyperReality.
The concept is mentioned in HyperReality edited by Professor John Tiffin and Professor Nobuyoshi Terashima which was published by Routledge,UK in 2001.

We welcome any applicants for the research mentioned above. If you are interested , please feel free to contact us.

One of the main issue concerning our project is HyperClass. The outline of HyperClass is shown here.
Abstract
Distance Education systems have been developed and put in actual use throughout the world. The objectives are that high quality lectures can be shared among participants who are at different locations. In this system, lectures are sent to each site through the communication links while questions or comments are sent back to a teacher. We are, however, developing a more advanced platform for distance education. In this system, participants who are at different locations, in reality their images, are brought together through HyperReality(HR) in the Hyper World and can receive lectures as well as carry out experiments jointly. HR plays an important role to achieve this system. HR is a new concept of merging Physical Reality and Virtual reality. In this paper, VR and HR are described and HyperClass is introduced.

HyperClass

HyperClass is a class where a teacher and students, in reality their images, are brought together through the communication network, heve lectures and do cooperative work as if they were gathered in a same place. The conventional video conference system provides a video conferencing, not a cooperative work. However HyperClass provides not only a conferencing but a cooperative work. In the HyperClass, a 3D virtual space is created and then viewers can enter into and handle a virtual object by hand gestures, mouse and keyboards. Each people there can handle it jointly. It is not necessary for them to get together actually. They can have an experiment cooperatively while they are at different places.
